“Book Fairies” Collecting and Providing Books for 500 Rochester Students

Now through July 1st EnCompass: Resources for Learning will collect books at 16 Lakeview Park Rochester, NY and distribute to 500 elementary students as part of the 3^rd Annual Book Fairy Project. The event promotes literacy and summer learning for children throughout Rochester. Books can be purchased at bit.ly/bookfairylist or at Hipocampo Children's Books. 

Remember curling up with a story on the porch, crossing titles off your required school reading list, or visiting the library to get the next book in your favorite series? Books and summer seem made for each other, but the season is often slippery time for struggling learners! Summer slide can erase a whole year of literacy skills for children.

With quality, year-round learning and literacy services, EnCompass is committed to stopping summer learning loss. In addition to programs focused on reading growth, the organization introduced a tradition of kicking off summer with visits from the Book Fairies!

Now in its 3rd year, the The Book Fairy Project provides elementary students city-wide with a special delivery of literacy materials. Beginning in May, EnCompass collects items on their wish list including: culturally relevant books, journals and writing utensils, healthy non-perishable snacks, small puzzles and games, craft and coloring supplies, and small outdoor toys.

Special bags containing these items are delivered directly to students' doorsteps or summer learning classrooms. EnCompass Summer Learning provides 500 students with enriching, full-day, academically based programs. It takes at sites including JCC of Rochester, Nazareth College, St. John Fisher College, RIT, and The Sands Family Campus.

The Book Fairies can't do it alone and community support will ensure 500 children receive a special delivery before the Book Fairies disappear for the year.
